Total Shaving Solution
Since I started blogging in 2004 I’ve never plugged a product before. Partly because I’ve never really been enamoured enough with any product and also because if a company wants me to promote something of theirs then they ought to pay me for it!
Anyway I’m not getting anything out of doing this so it’s the former which is changing for one day only!
Back in 2003 I visited Ireland for the first time and just before my holiday started I won in a competition one of Wilkinson’s new razors so that came with me too. When I used it for the first time the shave was pretty close but I’d cut my face to shreds. Up until then I’d always used Gillette blades and never had any major problems but a few days later when I shaved again the same thing happened, I looked like I’d been headbutted on the nose. I’d done all the usual stuff, used hot water, made sure my face was nice and wet first etc but it didn’t make any difference as I’d still end up with cuts. It wouldn’t make much difference whether the blade was new or used.
So I found myself in a Boots store in Dublin and found Total Shave Solution oil on the shelf. I’d used shaving oils in the past to varying degrees of success and what would usually put me off buying and using them more often was the price or poor results. Anyway there was something about TSS which caught my eye so I decided to give it a go. Hell am I glad I did!
The first thing you learn about this stuff is you only use 3 drops (although I’ve since moved up to 5 drops) and you can still put gel/cream/foam/whatever over the top if you want but it’s up to you. One of the attractions with using shaving oil is you can see where you’re shaving, ideal if you’ve got some ‘manscaping’ going on. Personally I prefer to see where I’ve shaved instead – this is why I like to use gel or cream over the top.
Anyway what you’re supposed to do is wash your face with water as hot as you can stand it, apply the oil by rubbing it in all over the area to be shaved, splash a bit more water over it and start your shave (or apply the gel, foam etc just before you drag the steel across your face). It’s important to rinse the blade more often with oil than you would without.
How you shave it of course up to you – every bloke has his own way of shaving so you just incorporate it to your usual routine. When I use it I find the shave is a lot smoother, my face doesn’t sting anywhere near how much it does without the oil and there are very few (if any) cuts. The website says it eliminates red rash – in my experience (and don’t forget I have very coarse stubble on very sensitive skin) it doesn’t completely remove it however it happens a hell of a lot less now. Far less than any other shaving oil has left me with.
My only gripe is it seems to reduce the life of those lubricating strips you get on the Gillette Fusion razors but that’s not an issue for me – I’ve always found those strips to be more of a gimmick and in any case 90% of the time I use Wilkinson blades.
The other thing to factor in to it is the price – it’s around £8 (including postage which is pretty good) which is a lot more expensive than other shave oils but you get around 225 shaves per bottle which if like me you shave at least every other day will last you almost a year.
One more thing, you can’t get it in any shops in mainland UK for some reason which is disappointing but it’s not really a problem, as I mentioned before the postage is free.
If you’re in to this sort of thing, TTS are pretty environmentally friendly too, the bottle is made from recycled materials and you can request that they send it without packaging so you just get the bottle in a padded envelope. The ingredients are all natural also. They have a money-back guarantee as well but I can’t imagine anyone not being happy with it. It can even be used if you use an electric razor too.
The website is http://www.totalshave.com/ and in my opinion is the greatest shaving accessory on the market. I wet-shave my head as well and there’s no way I’m going back to doing that or shaving my face without TSS oil ever again.
Thanks to www.rburt.net for his review!
